Using the Library


                                                 How to get a library card

Clarkesville-Habersham Library is a member of PINES, and PINES library cards are free to all residents of Georgia. To get a card, you will be asked to fill out an application form and to present identification. Applications are available at the library’s circulation desk. Original documents are required for identification, photocopies are not acceptable.

Acceptable ID for receiving a PINES card (3 choices): 

  • Photo ID showing current local address, OR
  • Photo ID and one item from approved list (see below) showing current, local address (if photo ID does not have correct address), OR
  • TWO (2) items from approved list showing current, local address. 

List of Acceptable ID:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Valid voter registration card
  • Valid matricula consular
  • Checks with pre-printed addresses
  • A utility bill
  • Tax receipt or other piece of mail that shows the user’s name and present address.

By signing the library card application form, you are accepting full responsibility for all fines and fees including late fines, and fees for lost or damaged materials.

There is no minimum age for a child to receive a PINES card. The process is the same as it is for obtaining an adult card, except a parent or legal guardian's proper identification will be used. A parent or legal guardian must also sign the application for all children under 18. The parent or guardian who signs the application form accepts full responsibility for all late fines or fees for lost or damaged materials.

Checking out and renewing materials

A library card is required in order to check out materials. Library card barcodes may also be scanned from handheld devices. You will be asked to show ID or confirm your identity if presenting a barcode on a mobile device.

A patron must present a card in good standing to borrow materials. If a patron owes $10 or more in unpaid fines and/or fees, the patron’s card will be blocked, and no services may be obtained with it.

Up to 50 items may be checked out on a card at once. Audio-visual materials (DVDs, games, etc.) are limited to 15 per patron at any given time.

Most books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and magazines at the Clarkesville Library may be checked out for 2 weeks and may be renewed two times. Renewals are not available if the item is on hold for another library user. Items may be renewed in person at the library by providing the library card or the item to be renewed. Items may be renewed over the phone by providing the library card number. Patrons can also renew materials online from their PINES accounts.

Renewing your library card

Library cards expire after two years and require you to visit the library with picture ID to renew. You will also need to resolve any fines or fees that are present on the account at this time.

Your online account

Your online account is automatically created when you register for a library card. Once you have a card, you can manage your account online, including renewing materials, placing holds on books, and more. To log in to your online account, click on the My Account Button at the top right of the PINES catalog.

What’s my PIN/password for my online account?

If you don't know your password, you have several options:

  • If this is a brand new card, try entering the last four digits of the phone number on your account.
  • If your account information includes your email address, you may use the Forgot your password? link on the login screen to reset your password. The system does this in batches, so it may take between 30-60 minutes for you to receive the password reset email.​
  • You may go into any PINES library with your card and your ID to request that the library staff reset your password for you.

Placing Holds

The Clarkesville-Habersham Library is a member of the PINES library system, a lending network for 284 libraries and affiliated service outlets in 53 library systems covering 143 counties. Library card holders may place holds on books at libraries in this system to have the book sent to our library for them. A typical PINES library cardholder can have up to 50 holds placed at one time.

PINES libraries do not allow holds on audiovisual materials (DVDs, music CDs, audiobooks, and other electronic media) that do not belong to the borrower's home library system. PINES libraries also optionally restrict hold placement on recently acquired materials, such as current bestsellers. If you attempt to place a hold request on an item that has one of these restrictions, you may receive the message "No items were found that could fulfill the requested holds" even when it appears that the items are available. Please note that this restriction only applies to hold requests. Reference materials and certain other materials may only be used within the library and not checked out. PINES library patrons can check out materials in person at any PINES library.

Lost cards

You are responsible for any items checked out on your card, so if you lose it or if it is stolen, please report it to the library immediately. The library staff will be able to block your card so that if someone else finds your card, they will not be able to use it. To request a replacement card, visit the library in person with your proof of ID. You will be required to pay a $2 card replacement fee. You will receive a new card with a different card number and your old card will remain deactivated. Any outstanding fines and fees, as well as records of currently checked out or overdue items will be automatically associated with your new card number.
